For the first time in my professional career, someone trusted me with the final decision on a design project. For whatever reason, my design ideas had been inferior to someone else with more power. The growing frustration of participating in a creative industry that is notorious for avoiding risk (um yes, the fundamental element of innovation) seemed like a paradox that I could not reconcile.
I departed the ad biz for the new MFA program at the University of Michigan. After completing my first of three years, the visionary Dean, Bryan Rogers, enlisted my help for the poster design of the Penny W. Stamps Distinguished Visitors Series. He didn't get in the way and the result was a series of breakthrough typographic works that finally set me free.
